Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
