British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
